Review| Cinderella

With the newly releases of Maleficant (2014, about Sleeping Beauty) and the anticipation for the live-action Beauty and The Beast (out in 2017 starring Emma Watson and Dan Stevens), I could not wait to go to the cinemas and watch the live-action remake of Cinderella, my favourite out of all the princesses.

Starring: Cate Blanchett, Lily James, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter, Stellan Skarsgard, Sophie McShera, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi, Rob Brydon, Hayley Atwell, Ben Chaplin.
Director: Kenneth Branagh
Running time: 113 minutes
Release Year: 2015
Rating out of 5: 4.5

The film is set in a beautiful, picturesque kingdom, where a young blonde hair girl named Ella (James) live with her two loving parents. As both of her parents pass away, she live with her wicked stepmother (Blachett), who married her father before he died, and her two step sister Anastasia (Grainger) and Drisella (McShera). Known to them as Cinderella, her world is turned upside down when she meets a man who called himself Kit, who turns out to be the prince (Madden). With a little help of her animal friend and her fairy godmother (Bonham Carter), Cinderella soon captures the heart of her prince.

Known for her role in ITVs period drama Downton Abbey, Lily James was casted perfectly as the title character. Her long blonde hair and her big brown eyes are something's that are so mesmerising. Richard Madden, known for playing Robb Stark in Game of Thrones, suits well as being the prince. Staring in his blue eyes will definitely make you fall in love with him.

With her red hair and red lipstick, Cate Blanchett is the horrible stepmother. She portrayed her beautifully and well, even I was frightened of her and her piercing looks. As for her two scheming daughter, Grainger and McShera are great, with one liners coming in here, there and everywhere in it.

Kenneth Branagh directed the film and it was great to see another side of his talents. I am so used to seeing him on the screen (Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret, Five children and It, The Boat that Rocked and My week with Marilyn to name but a few), his directing skills were superb. Every scene was beautifully shot and placed together in sequence. The vibrant colours of the kingdom surroundings and the costumes were perfectly stunning, leaving you breathless.

Throughout the film you could not help but feel sorry for Cinderella but also wanting her to stick up for herself against the stepmothers anger towards her. Her promise to her mother, have courage and be kind, is a moral that everyone should have and taken away after watching this remake from the classic 1950 animated one.
However, this film will definitely leave you feeling light hearted and is perfect for all ages. The cast, the scenery and the adorable animals (who are hilarious in some scenes), it will make you believe in magic and love.
